Gallery: In the Swim Series

This series of ten acrylic paintings on canvas was done between 1999 and 2002. As a lap swimmer, I loved observing the behavior and interaction of the other swimmers. I remembered what I saw, went home, and made drawings from memory. Ultimately a series of drawings developed, followed by this series of paintings. For the most part, these works are lightweight tongue-in-cheek humor. However, there are some serious statements: "First Dive" represents the re-entry woman, of which I was one, returning to school long after marriage and children. Next is "Achievement." This work refers to the seemingly small accomplishment of completing a somersault at the end of each lap. It speaks of the virtue of perseverance. "Territoriality" is also thoughtful as it deals with the battle of the sexes. In this case, it dealt with the chauvinism the women had to put up with. The men were terrified that the women swimmers would merge on their side of the lane. In truth, many of the women swimmers were better than their male counterparts. And believe it or not, "Happiness is a Hot Shower" is not about sex. It's about an ice cold swimmer who couldn't wait to complete her laps so she could enjoy a hot shower. This series represents more than what happens in the pool....It's another glimpse of the larger society in microcosm.
